Job Title: Cargo Equipment Operator

Reports to: Cargo Service Team Leader
Department: Cargo
Location: Kigali International Airport – Town Office

Job Purpose

The Cargo Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe, secure, and efficient operation of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) and warehouse cargo handling equipment in accordance with airport operational requirements and customer airline standards.

The role supports cargo movement between the aircraft and warehouse while ensuring full compliance with operational procedures, safety regulations, and applicable regulatory requirements.

1. Key Duties and Responsibilities

Operational

  • Operate Ground Support Equipment (GSE) in support of warehouse and airside cargo operations.

  • Operate GSE only upon successful completion of required training, certification, and authorization by the Line Supervisor.

  • Ensure strict adherence to safety regulations to prevent accidents, injuries, and equipment damage.

  • Prepare, inspect, and position GSE in accordance with aircraft turnaround requirements.

  • Use GSE strictly for its intended purpose and within operational limits.

  • Comply with all airport regulations governing airside driving and equipment movement.

  • Tow cargo, Unit Load Devices (ULDs), dollies, and pallets between aircraft and warehouse using appropriate equipment.

  • Support aircraft loading and offloading operations, ensuring safety, accuracy, and efficiency.

  • Load and unload trucks, containers, and internal vehicles using forklifts or other handling equipment.

  • Transfer cargo efficiently between acceptance, storage, staging, and delivery areas.

  • Stack, segregate, and store cargo in accordance with established SOPs and handling requirements.

  • Perform daily serviceability inspections of assigned GSE and complete required checklists prior to operation.

  • Report any defects, abnormalities, or equipment malfunctions immediately to the Cargo Service Team Leader and GSE unit.

  • Utilize handheld devices and Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) to accurately record cargo movements.

  • Maintain accurate documentation for cargo receipt, transfer, and dispatch.

  • Wear mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and comply with all safety and airside procedures.

  • Participate in shift handovers to ensure effective communication and operational continuity.

  • Handle Time and Temperature Sensitive cargo in accordance with applicable regulations and procedures.

  • Ensure all required licenses and permits, including Airside Driving Permit, remain valid at all times.

  • Maintain a safe, secure, and compliant working environment in line with company and regulatory requirements.

  • Report any irregularities observed during loading and offloading operations.

  • Report all security threats and incidents encountered during operations.

  • Report hazards, incidents, and occurrences in accordance with company reporting procedures.

2. About You – Minimum Standard Qualifications

Essential

  • Minimum qualification: Advanced Level (A Level) certificate.

  • Valid driving license (Class B and F).

3. Other Desired Competencies & Skills

Job Specific Skills – Essential

  • Ground Support Equipment (GSE) operation.

  • Cargo handling and loading techniques.

  • Airside safety and regulatory compliance.

  • Dangerous goods handling knowledge.

  • Operational communication and ramp coordination.
