Job Title: DevOps Engineer

Job Grade: JG G-Specialist

Division: IT & Digital Innovation – Digital Innovation Unit

Reports to: Head, Digital Innovation & Data

Contract terms: Open ended contract

Purpose of the Job

The DevOps Engineer is responsible for building and operating the platform that runs the Bank's microservices at scale. The role deploys and manages containerized microservices on Kubernetes, provisions and hardens clusters using open-source tooling such as Kubespray, and automates the full delivery lifecycle through CI/CD and Infrastructure as Code. The role brings a strong reliability and security mindset, a bias for automation, and genuine enthusiasm for the open-source ecosystem — continuously learning and adopting new tools, approaches, and methodologies as the landscape evolves.

Main Responsibilities of the Job

Duties and responsibilities shall include but not limited to:

  • Deploy microservices. Package, release, and operate containerized microservices on Kubernetes with zero-downtime strategies (rolling, blue-green, canary).
  • Provision Kubernetes clusters. Stand up, upgrade, and maintain production-grade clusters using open-source tooling such as Kubespray, including on-prem and bare-metal deployments.
  • Automate delivery (CI/CD). Design and maintain CI/CD pipelines and GitOps workflows for fast, safe, repeatable releases.
  • Manage infrastructure as code. Define and version infrastructure with tools like Terraform and Ansible; treat environments as reproducible code.
  • Ensure reliability & observability. Implement monitoring, logging, tracing, alerting, and SLOs; lead incident response and continuous improvement.
  • Harden security & compliance. Apply container and cluster security, secrets management, RBAC, and network policies aligned to best practice.
  • Optimize cost & performance. Right-size workloads, tune autoscaling, and improve resource efficiency across clusters.
  • Collaborate, mentor, and keep learning. Partner with developers, contribute to open-source where relevant, and continuously adopt new tools and methodologies.

Performance Indicators

  • Platform availability and uptime of Kubernetes clusters and hosted microservices.
  • Deployment frequency, lead time for changes, and change failure rate (DORA metrics).
  • Mean time to detect (MTTD) and mean time to recover (MTTR) for platform incidents.
  • Coverage of infrastructure managed as code and automation of previously manual tasks.
  • Security and compliance posture: RBAC, secrets management, image scanning, and policy adherence.
  • Cost and resource efficiency improvements across clusters and workloads.

Working relationships

Internal: Digital Innovation, Software Development, Application Management, Service Management, IT Infrastructure, Database and Data Platform, Information Security, Internal Audit.

External: Cloud service providers, infrastructure and tooling vendors, integration partners, open-source communities.

Professional, academic qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, or a related field — or equivalent practical experience.
  • Typically, two (2)+ years in DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering, including hands-on Kubernetes in production and cluster provisioning with tools such as Kubespray.
  • Certifications (CKA/CKAD/CKS, Terraform Associate) and open-source contributions are an advantage; fintech/banking experience is a plus.

Core competencies

Technical Skills — Containers & Orchestration

  • Strong hands-on experience deploying and operating microservices on Kubernetes in production.
  • Cluster provisioning and lifecycle management with open-source tooling such as Kubespray; Helm for packaging and Kustomize for configuration.
  • Docker and container best practices (image hardening, multi-stage builds, registries).

Technical Skills — CI/CD & Automation

  • CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins) and GitOps (Argo CD or Flux).
  • Scripting and automation (Bash, Python, or Go) to eliminate manual toil.

Technical Skills — Infrastructure as Code & Cloud

  • Infrastructure as Code with Terraform and configuration management with Ansible.
  • Experience with at least one cloud (AWS/Azure/GCP) and/or on-prem and bare-metal environments; Linux administration and networking.

Technical Skills — Observability, Reliability & Security

  • Monitoring and logging stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK/Loki) and distributed tracing (Jaeger/OpenTelemetry).
  • Cluster and supply-chain security (RBAC, network policies, secrets management, image scanning); familiarity with service mesh (Istio/Linkerd) is a plus.

Core Competencies & Mindset

  • Fast learner. Quickly ingests and applies new tools, open-source projects, approaches, and methodologies with minimal ramp-up.
  • Automation-first & systems thinking. Automates by default and reasons about the whole distributed system, not just single components.
  • Reliability & ownership. Takes end-to-end accountability for uptime, performance, and security, with strong attention to detail.
  • Open-source oriented. Comfortable reading, adopting, and contributing to open-source tooling like Kubespray and the broader CNCF ecosystem.
  • Collaboration & communication. Works effectively with developers and stakeholders and communicates clearly under pressure, including during incidents.
