1. Role Summary

The Public Transport Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the planning, design, supervision, and operational readiness of public transport infrastructure across the network. This includes identifying and validating locations for bus stops, defining and enforcing design standards, overseeing the management and upkeep of bus stations, and supporting maintenance activities across terminals, shelters, signage, and public transport amenities.

The role ensures that public transport infrastructure is safe, accessible, well-maintained, and aligned with Ecofleet’s operational and service-delivery needs.

2. Scope of the Role

  • Plan, assess, and validate locations for new bus stops and stations.
  • Define, implement, and update design standards for bus stops, signage, shelters, stations, and passenger amenities.
  • Oversee operations, management, and maintenance of bus stations and priority terminals.
  • Conduct field inspections, audits, and infrastructure condition assessments.
  • Support maintenance planning and infrastructure asset management.
  • Work with planning and operations teams to ensure infrastructure readiness for service routes.
  • Maintain operational documentation, inventories, and reporting systems.

3. Key Responsibilities

Infrastructure Planning & Design

  • Identify appropriate locations for bus stops through field surveys, accessibility assessments, and route analysis.
  • Prepare and update technical design standards for:
    • Bus stops and shelters
    • Passenger seating and shading structures
    • Bus station layouts
    • Signage and wayfinding elements
    • Safety markings and lighting
  • Support preparation of standard drawings and infrastructure guidelines.
  • Ensure infrastructure designs comply with safety, accessibility, and urban mobility best practices.

Bus Station & Terminal Management

  • Oversee daily functioning, cleanliness, safety, and user experience at assigned bus stations.
  • Coordinate crowd management, boarding arrangements, and passenger flow at terminals.
  • Ensure station amenities (toilets, seating, information boards, lighting) are functional and well-maintained.
  • Work with relevant teams to resolve operational issues affecting station performance.

Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections of bus stops, shelters, signage, and station facilities.
  • Identify maintenance needs and coordinate timely interventions with maintenance teams/contractors.
  • Maintain an updated inventory of infrastructure assets and consumables.
  • Support long-term maintenance planning and asset lifecycle management.

Operational Support & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, incident logs, and station management records.
  • Provide updates to planning, operations, and management teams regarding infrastructure status.
  • Support readiness efforts for new routes, upgraded infrastructure, or passenger facility projects.

4. Indicators of Success

  • Well-planned and strategically located bus stops that improve route efficiency and passenger access.
  • Consistent application of design standards across the public transport network.
  • High-quality, clean, and safe bus stations and public transport facilities.
  • Timely maintenance and reduced downtime of critical infrastructure.
  • Improved passenger satisfaction and smoother station operations.
  • Accurate and reliable documentation supporting infrastructure decisions.

5. Working Relationships

Internal

  • CSEO – Direct supervision and reporting.
  • Planning & Operations Teams – Route planning, service adjustments, and infrastructure readiness.
  • ITS and Control Room Teams – Monitoring station/shelter conditions and operational alerts.
  • Maintenance Teams – Repairs, preventive maintenance, and asset management support.

External

  • Local government bodies for approvals of bus stop locations and public space use.
  • Contractors, engineers, and vendors involved in construction and maintenance.
  • Passenger groups and community stakeholders interacting with bus stops and stations.

6. Core Competencies & Skills

  • Strong technical understanding of civil, transport, or infrastructure engineering.
  • Ability to develop and interpret design standards, drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Skilled in field assessments, infrastructure audits, and planning analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills for working with communities, operators, and regulators.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Problem-solving ability and initiative in improving infrastructure conditions.
  • Understanding of safety and accessibility standards.

8. Qualifications & Experience

Minimum

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transport Engineering, Urban Planning, Architecture, or a related field.
  • 2–4 years of experience in infrastructure planning, site supervision, public works, or facility management.

Preferred

  • Experience in transport infrastructure or public space design.
  • Familiarity with urban mobility systems and bus station operations.
  • Experience with maintenance planning or asset management.
  • Knowledge of GIS or mapping tools is an added advantage.
